NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Atlantis Coral Towers is closing its doors temporarily and the union that represents hundreds of Atlantis workers isn’t happy about the move, so what’s going to be the fall out?

The announcement coming today in a statement, Executive Vice President of Administration and Strategic Initiatives at Atlantis, Vaughn Roberts, says the tower will close on August 17th in order to finish plumbing repairs which were suspended earlier due to high occupancies.

The statement adds that the closure is not unusual and that Atlantis has used the season to reduce operations for the past twenty years.

However, how do the workers feel?

Bahamas Hotel, Catering and Allied Workers Union President, Darrin Woods, says they’re doing all they can to limit income-loss.

We’re trying to get them to take some of that vacation time so it doesn’t impact them negatively in terms of financial impact…all of the persons in the service area over there is pretty much affected…,” he said.

While Atlantis has not revealed the exact number of impacted employees, Woods believes it’s in the hundreds.

The closure will last around eight weeks, and the union isn’t the only one keeping a close eye on the situation.
