French Opposition Calls For Elections After Government Collapses

FRANCE – A fresh political crisis in France, as President Emmanuel Macron faces growing calls to resign after his new prime minister quit just hours into the job.

Prime Minister Sebastien Le Cornu, Macron’s fifth in just two years,  stepped down only 14 hours after forming his government. 

He cited threats from both allies and opponents that made it impossible to govern.

The collapse has fueled fierce opposition demands. 

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen says Macron should dissolve parliament and call new elections, while leftist firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon is pushing for impeachment and a new presidential vote.

Since Macron’s re-election in 2022, no party has held a parliamentary majority, leaving his government weakened and unable to pass key reforms.

Macron, whose term runs until 2027, has repeatedly ruled out resigning or triggering a presidential election.
