Darville: Homosexuals at High Risk for Monkeypox

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville says although homosexuals are at higher risk for monkeypox, everyone is at risk of being exposed or making contact with individuals with the disease.

Dr. Darville says his ministry is working in connection with PAHO to conduct training training and The Bahamas in now able to test for monkeypox.

On Saturday, the World Health Organization said monkeypox is considered “moderate” globally and in all regions, except Europe, where the risk as been assessed as high.

According to the WHO Secretariat, “The majority of reported cases of monkeypox currently are in males, and most of these cases occur among males who identified themselves as gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM), in urban areas, and are clustered in social and sexual networks. Early reports of children affected include a few with no known epidemiological link to other cases.”
