Former Death Row Inmate Handed 35-Year Sentence for 1990 Murder

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former death row inmate has been resentenced to 35 years in prison for a 1990 murder.

Ricardo Farrington was initially sentenced to hang in 1992 for the shooting death of Renard Ferguson at Soldier Road in 1990. However, in 1996, the Privy Council commuted the sentence to life in prison.

A decade later, the Privy Council ruled that the mandatory death penalty was unconstitutional, leading to the resentencing of murder convict’s by the Supreme Court.

The Privy Council ordered Farrington resentenced in November 2024 and released him on bail.

Senior Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson resentenced Farrington to 35 years in prison plus five years of probation.

If he commits any offense while on probation, Farrington will be sent back to prison for two years.
