Japan Lifts Tsunami Advisory After Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake

JAPAN – Japan has lifted a tsunami advisory hours after a moderate earthquake struck the country’s northeastern coast, the latest in a series of seismic events raising concerns in the region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the advisory after a preliminary magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit off the coast of Aomori prefecture just before midday Friday.

Officials warned of waves up to one meter but later canceled the advisory after no major tsunami activity was recorded.

The quake struck at a depth of about 20 kilometres and comes just days after a stronger 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the same general region earlier this week.

Following that earlier quake, the japanese government issued a special alert, urging residents from Hokkaido in the North to Chiba near Tokyo to remain vigilant, warning of an increased risk of another strong earthquake within a week.

No immediate reports of serious damage or injuries have been released.
