BARBADOS – Voters in Barbados head to the polls Wednesday as Prime Minister Mia Mottley seeks a historic third consecutive term, facing opposition leader Ralph Thorne.

Mottley, one of the Caribbean’s most prominent global figures has championed climate action, led Barbados’ transition to a republic in 2021, and currently leads a party that holds 29 of the 30 seats in Parliament.

The opposition which now holds one seat is campaigning on crime, infrastructure, and cost of living – saying more focus is needed on domestic priorities.

Election officials are also pushing back against claims of problems with the voters’ register, insisting the process is legitimate.

Reuters reports if re-elected, Mottley would become the first woman in Barbados’ history to serve three straight terms.
