MEXICO – Mexico is sending more humanitarian aid to Cuba as tensions continue with the United States over support to the island.

The Mexican government says two vessels carrying more than 800 metric tons of food supplies departed Sunday from the port of Veracruz.

According to Mexican officials, the shipment includes milk, meat products, beans, rice, tuna, sardines, cookies, vegetable oil and personal hygiene items.

The aid comes as Washington has warned it could impose tariffs on countries that supply crude oil to Cuba.

Last week, Mexican authorities said they are also exploring ways to provide fuel to help meet Cuba’s basic needs, including electricity and transportation, without triggering U.S. retaliation.
