“I Feel That the Caribbean Countries All Feel a Moral Obligation to Assist Cuba”

SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS – The fourth day of the 50th regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, better known as CARICOM, was underway in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Opening ceremonies were held yesterday and regional leaders immediately beginning the work. Foreign Affairs Minister, Fred Mitchell, noted there were hosted meetings with a parade of foreign visitors, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as it relates to the nation’s recent presence in the Caribbean.

Mitchell says the U.S. Has taken a firm position on what they’re doing.

Now U.S. President, Donald Trump, had previously threatened tariff hikes against any nation sending energy supplies to Cuba and has urged the island’s leaders to reach a deal to avert a worsening humanitarian crisis, as to what the next steps may be following today’s meeting.

The Bahamian delegation held a bi-lateral meeting with the Haitian delegation. Mitchell noted that the authority for the transitional presidential council that gave authority for the government, expired on February 7th.

And as the body of leaders head into caucuses to focus on matters within the community, Mitchell shares the top focus for The Bahamas.
