The Beginning of a Renaissance for Mayaguana

MAYAGUANA, BAHAMAS – A major milestone for the easternmost island of The Bahamas — Mayaguana — as officials officially opened a new $2.1 million airport terminal.

The modern facility is now equipped to accommodate international air traffic, complete with immigration and customs services. The project took about a year to complete and was commissioned on Saturday, bringing renewed hope to residents.

Family Island Administrator Marlon Leary called it the beginning of a new era of opportunity for the island.

The development came through a public-private partnership with the Mayaguana Island Developers Group. Chairman Stephen Roy said the project was fast-tracked after public outrage over a viral video showing deplorable conditions at the island’s more than 60-year-old airport.

Plans tied to the broader development vision include a marine offloading facility, cruise ship terminal and deep-water transshipment port.

Tourism Minister Chester Cooper says infrastructure is key to economic growth and improved quality of life across the archipelago.

Prime Minister Philip Davis described the project as part of the government’s commitment to a Family Island renaissance, stressing that every Bahamian deserves world-class infrastructure.
