NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who escaped from police custody in a stolen police truck has been jailed for 18 months.

Police officers arrested 30-year-old Daniel Mott and 38-year-old Dominick Clarke on may 6 after they were allegedly found with appliances and tools that were stolen from an under-construction triplex on Bellot Road.

While at the East Street South police station, the officers left the handcuffed suspects unattended in the back of 2023 Nissan Frontier police truck, while they secured stolen goods.

Mott slipped out of his cuffs and climbed into the driver’s seat of the police vehicle and sped off.

He punched a policeman in an attempt to resist arrest when he was cornered at Winder’s Terrace later that day. Clarke remains at large.

Mott pleaded guilty to charges of stealing, receiving, resisting arrest, assaulting a policeman and escape when he appeared before assistant Chief Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux.

He was sentenced to 18 months for escape and one year for the other charges.

The sentences will be served at the same time.
