NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The Bahamas had two teams in the field, and both picked up dramatic wins Sunday night at the PONY Baseball 14U Caribbean and Latin American Zone Championships at the Andre Rodgers National Stadium.

Bahamas Host rallied from six runs down in dramatic fashion to defeat Aruba 16-11.

Trailing entering the seventh inning, Team Bahamas erupted for six runs in the top half of the frame to complete the comeback. The decisive blow came with two outs and runners on second and third when Devarrio Burrows delivered a clutch two-run double to put the hosts ahead for good.

On the mound, Garelle Gabriel Jr. played the role of closer. Entering the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, he limited Aruba to just one run.

He then sealed the victory in the seventh, inducing three consecutive ground-ball outs to close out the contest and secure the win.

The victory improved Bahamas Host’s record to 2-1 as they prepared to close out round-robin play against undefeated Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas Champs squad improved to 2-1 with an 11-6 victory over Curaçao.

Team Bahamas raced out to an 8-0 advantage and built enough of a cushion to withstand a late rally from the visitors.

Bahamas Champs will conclude round-robin competition against undefeated Venezuela with a chance to continue their push toward the championship round.

FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

The Bahamas Basketball Federation has announced a 24-man preliminary roster for next month’s FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying window in Nassau.

The player pool is headlined by NBA stars Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield, VJ Edgecombe and Eric Gordon, along with others like Kai Jones and Isaiah Mobley, who have also spent time in the league.

The full preliminary roster also includes veterans Kentwan Smith, Radshad Davis, Jaraun Burrows, Travis Munnings and Tavario Miller; young professionals Franco Miller Jr., Garvin Clarke Jr., Samuel Hunter, Domnick Bridgewater, Lathaniel Bastian and Aaron Levarity; and collegiate players Donovan Freeman, Deyton Albury, Fred King Jr., Romad Dean, Leano Rolle, AJ Storr and Valentino Simon.

The Bahamas is scheduled to host Jamaica on July 3 and Puerto Rico on July 6 at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium as the country continues its quest to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The 24-man list will be trimmed to a final 12-man roster closer to the competition.

MLB

New York Yankees All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered in a big moment as his team defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-1 on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cody Bellinger broke the deadlock with a solo home run before the Yankees exploded for five runs in the frame.

Chisholm provided the knockout blow, launching a three-run home run to cap the rally and put the game out of reach.

Chisholm’s home run came while using a bat belonging to injured teammate Aaron Judge, adding an interesting subplot to the afternoon’s biggest swing.

The Yankees’ pitching staff was equally impressive, limiting Boston to a single run as New York secured the 6-1 victory.
