Former GB MP: “Consistent Thumping and Vibration Will Cause This to Collapse”

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Former Central Grand Bahama MP Iram Lewis is sounding the alarm over what he describes as a dangerous situation at the Fishing Hole Causeway.

Lewis is raising concerns about what he believes is a deteriorating structure, warning that without immediate repairs, the damage could become much worse.

First opened in 2020, the causeway was built to improve travel and commerce between East and West Grand Bahama.

However, the former MP says just over six years later, there are visible signs of structural stress that cannot be ignored.

During an exclusive interview, he took Our News cameraman Dave Mackey under the bridge, showing him the evident signs of wear and tear.

It was not just falling rubble, as exposed reinforcing steel can be seen protruding from the structure.

Lewis says the damage is being made worse by the continued use of the causeway by heavy commercial vehicles, and says the lower road was designed to handle that traffic, reducing the stress on the bridge above, but says that hasn’t been happening.

He also insists the problem is one of management, not engineering, and added that the area is prone to flooding during severe weather.
