“This is crunch time, right? So all of the walls are going up. Lots of our artists have started to arrive, and so what we’re trying to do by the end of today is have the six major installations installed.”

Rain or shine, the work must go on and that was certainly the case at Baha Mar.

Despite the downpour, workers pushed ahead, building stages, putting up walls and preparing exhibition spaces for this year’s Bahamas Culinary and Arts Festival.

During Our News’ visit to the property, the sounds of drills, hammers and saws filled the air as crews worked to bring the festival to life.

And what looks like a construction site right now will soon become a showcase of Caribbean art and culture.

Baha Mar’s Vice President of Art and Culture, John Cox, says the FUSE Caribbean Art Fair alone will feature 54 exhibition booths and six major art installations.

“We have 54 booths, which are… A booth is like this section that you’re seeing right here, this kind of 20-by-10-foot section. And if you look at the very back, there’s a little rendering here. This shows you what’s supposed to be going on in this particular section. So each one of them has its own little section. So we’re working…”

And getting all of this ready is no small task.

Cox says planning takes about ten months, with more than 100 people involved in bringing the art fair to life.

But the work doesn’t stop with the art fair.

Baha Mar’s Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, Nadia Bowe, says there’s an entire operation happening behind the scenes.

“We have amazing on-property partners, such as our culinary kitchens and all the different brands. We have an amazing partnership with the Wildflowers team, Sound Crate, even our security team, in terms of ensuring that certain items are protected and stored away where we need them to be. So I think it comes down to just having great partnerships.”

And that teamwork extends well beyond the people working on the ground.

Bowe says her full-time marketing team has just eight members.

“I think it comes down to just having great partnerships. Also, having an amazing team, and I think the marketing team, we are super small but mighty. We are a mighty team of eight. And so it’s amazing to see what we can actually put together.”
