NASSAU , BAHAMAS – A family is mourning the death of 42-year-old Lamond Brice, alleging negligence, delays in care and what they describe as a lack of remorse from doctors and the Public Hospitals Authority.

The family says they are now left with questions about what went wrong and whether their loved one could have been saved. Our Chinasa Outten has the story.

For Lamond Brice’s family, what started as a surgery they hoped would improve his health ended in a loss they say could have been prevented. Now, they’re demanding answers from the Public Hospitals Authority, questioning whether their loved one was failed when he needed care the most.

In an emotional conversation, Lamond Brice’s younger brother, Dominic Brice, recounted watching his brother’s condition deteriorate after he went to the hospital for what the family believed would be a routine surgery.

On September 3, 42-year-old Lamond Brice was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital to have a mass in his stomach removed, a mass his family says doctors had identified as non-cancerous.

The surgery was performed the following day and initially appeared to have been successful. But soon after, they say his condition began to worsen.

Two additional surgeries followed. However, according to his relatives, neither procedure significantly improved his condition.

The family claims that, after pressing doctors for answers, they were told a mistake had been made during the initial surgery, allegedly leaving Brice with failing intestines.

Days later, he died.

But for his family, the heartbreak did not end with his death. Dominic Brice says the family also sought assistance from Jackson Health System in Miami, hoping to get his brother the medical treatment he needed abroad.

However, he claims those efforts were delayed because of what the family describes as a lack of cooperation from the Public Hospitals Authority.

“Had we gotten certain information or certain documents, you know what I mean, on time, he would’ve been straight. And what hurt me the most, my brother didn’t even want to go to the hospital.”

The family also claims incomplete medical documents were sent to Miami, while a letter required to renew Brice’s passport was allegedly incomplete.

Now, they are left wondering whether the outcome could have been different had the necessary documents been provided in a timely manner.

Brice further claims that, since his brother’s death, the family has yet to hear from the minister or the Public Hospitals Authority, despite a statement issued by the authority on Monday.

As the family continues its search for answers, they say they are left grappling with the loss of a loved one and the painful questions surrounding his death.

“It ain’t easy, you know. So, persons come by and say, ‘Try to hold strong, be strong,’ and this and that, but it’s hard to be strong.”

“We just trying to get over one of our oldest brothers who just passed away, and now here comes this one.”

For his family, Lamond was more than a brother, a father or an uncle.

They describe him as the light of their family.

“Every holiday, every special occasion, he was like the life of the party. Joyful person, always smiling, giving person. He’d take you this place, take you that place, with no questions asked.”

Dominic says his father and Lamond’s daughter are among those struggling most with the loss.

But despite their grief, the family says they will not give up their fight for justice and accountability, hoping their tragedy will lead to change in a system they believe continues to fail patients.
