NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The king is coming, and if you’re planning to see him, you may want to brush up on your royal etiquette.

From what to wear to what to say, there’s a right way to make a first impression when you’re meeting the monarch.

King Charles III is expected to arrive in Nassau on October 27, with his visit running through October 29.

It will be his first official visit to The Bahamas as king, with a series of engagements expected to bring him face-to-face with government officials, dignitaries and members of the public.

So, if you get the chance to meet him, what should you wear?

Protocol specialist Kasey Collie says your first step is to check the invitation.

“Which is most important is to pay attention to your invitation. The invitation tells you exactly what to wear. “

For women, Collie has these recommendations.

“For ladies it is particularly important [to wear] an elegant dress, maybe a tailored suit is appropriate and then depending on the occasion gloves are expected as well.”

Meanwhile for the gentlemen, neckwear is required.

“So for men, depending on the dress code a well tailored suit, appropriate shirt, polished shoes and a tie that suits the suit that you’re wearing.”

Neutral colors are a must.

However, once you’ve got the outfit right, the next question is: how do you greet a king? Do you bow? Curtsy? Or go in for a handshake?

“Head nod or a light curtsy for the ladies.”

Then, when it comes to a handshake, don’t make the first move. Wait for the king to offer his hand.

Now, if his majesty stops to have a conversation with you, there’s no need to panic or get caught up in the formalities.

Just remember how to address him.

“It is your majesty at the initial introduction and then anything after that if you have a conversation with him it’s sir.”

So, whether you’re attending an official function or simply hoping to catch a glimpse of the monarch, a little royal etiquette could help you make the right impression.

After all, you never know when you might find yourself face-to-face with the king.
