NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Senator Pleasant Bridgewater resigned from her post as senator on January 24, 2009 – one day after she was charged with trying to extort money from American actor John Travolta, following the death of his son, Jett Travolta on Grand Bahama.

On January 24, 2014, then Prime Minister Perry Gladstone Christie was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

PM Christie was among ten 2014 honorees added to the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame during the 2014 Trumpet Awards on at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, National Park Service, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created in 2004 to give recognition to the foot soldiers of justice who sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all.

It has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city of Atlanta and has enriched the heritage of the civil rights movement.

On this day in 2022, students and teachers returned to face-to-face learning across the country, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In-person learning was suspended in March 2020. The Ministry of Education said the decision was made on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

In the first instance, all schools began with a hybrid model, utilizing all health and safety protocols including the wearing of masks, sanitization, social distancing, temperature checks, staggered breaks, outdoor eating and quarantine and isolation when and where necessary.
