‘We Will Not Support Free Movement Through Our Country’

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The prime minister may be the chairman of CARICOM, but The Bahamas is not a part of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.

Minister of Labour and Immigration, Keith Bell, was asked, Thursday, about the possibility of The Bahamas considering free movement for CARCIOM members in  the future.

Article 46 of CARICOM’S Treaty of Chaguaramas lays out the details of “movement of skilled community nationals” where university graduates, media, athletes, artists, and musicians and other service providers can travel and work within member states without the need of a work permit. 

Former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said back in 2018 that “the free movement of people can pose great threats not only to our security, but employment of the Bahamian populace”.
