NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Women from all walks of life sat down to talk about Bahamian women’s issues and the way forward at an International Women’s Day roundtable hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Wednesday night at the American Corner of the University of The Bahamas.

One of the panelists, President of The Bahamas National Chapter of Caribbean Women in Leadership, Charlene Paul stressed that she fears Bahamians don’t understand the severity of gender based violence in the country.

Going on to offer examples of other countries in the Caribbean, she compares them to the global per capita average of 15 in 100,000.

Paul says Jamaica stands at 51 in 100,000,  Barbados at 34 in 100,000, and St. Vincent and the grenadines came in at 112 per 100,000 but she says even those numbers, with the highest almost 7.5 times the global average, aren’t as high as ours.
