NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The call for a gender-based violence bill answered today as the Davis administration tabled the Protection Against Violence Bill 2023.

Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe tabling the Protection Against Violence Bill 2023 in Parliament, noting it was important to ensure the bill does not discriminate against anyone.

The bill also seeks to provide the framework for the administration of the act.

Under the bill, a Protection of Violence Commission will also be established.

The bill also establishes the rights of victims of violence. It also seeks to set out the procedure for the making and handling of complaints by victims as well as the requirements of an investigating officer.

The bill will also demonstrate government’s commitment in protecting women as the predominant victims of sexual abuse and outlines the care and support services available to such victims.

Wilchcombe says government will seek public feedback ahead of debate on the bill, by hosting a series of town hall meetings throughout the islands.
