Domestic Abuse Survivor Recounts Losing Right Eye

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After enduring domestic abuse in both of her marriages, a mother of three who lost her eye after being abused is speaking out on her experiences in hopes of inspiring others who may be in similar situations.

It was a night that changed her life; Domestic abuse survivor Philipa Smith lost her right eye during an incident involving her second husband.

She shared her story on the Royal Bahamas Police Force broadcast talk show ‘Cop Talk’.

Smith says she was rushed to hospital as blood drained from her eye socket.

She was then rushed into surgery where doctors did what they could.

Smith had planned to pursue charges against her second husband over the incident. However, she says she eventually dropped the charges after being persuaded to do so by her husband.

The mother, who has two sons and one daughter, says she has sought to educate her children on domestic violence, stressing to her daughter the importance of avoiding toxic situations and raising her sons not to become abusers.
