NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Though COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are on the decline, Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Michael Darville says the government is moving forward cautiously and preparing for the possibility of a fourth wave.

Jasmin Brown reports.

In recent weeks, new COVID cases and hospitalizations have been significantly lower.

Test positivity rates have also fallen significantly in recent days.

With the state of emergency set to come to an end on Saturday, to be replaced by new legislation to manage the pandemic, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper said the government is hesitant to lift COVID rules quickly in anticipation of future surges.

He added they will move forward in a “measured” and “consultative” way.

The Health Minister also addressed concerns about unregulated rapid antigen tests that were reportedly shipped to The Bahamas.

Dr. Darville says work is underway to locate substandard covid tests in The Bahamas after The Jamaica Observer reported earlier this week that The Bahamas and Jamaica were among two Caribbean countries where the tests were being used.
