BPL Union President: The Bahamian People Pay For Light Not For Fight

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While confusion remains over the future of Bahamas Power and Light, Bahamas Electrical Workers Union President Kyle Wilson says following a meeting with the prime minister, the union is still left with many unanswered questions.

And they’re not happy.

FNM Leader Michael Pintard claims the government plans to privatize the power giant.

This, as union leaders told Our News officials, revealed plans that the government is contracting a company to oversee BPL’s transmission and distribution systems.

Well, we sought to get answers from Prime Minister Philip Davis about what exactly is the plan for the utility company.

On Sunday, Davis denied claims BPL will be privatized.

In an X post, Energy Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis said the government’s energy reform roadmap is to, among other things, reduce prices, increase reliability and efficiency, add cleaner sources of energy, upgrade and modernize the outdated grids.

She said she’s looking forward to sharing updates in the coming days and weeks.  

Wilson says all plans point to a deal not in the best interest of Bahamians.

The union chief says their position will not change.

We asked what’s the plan to get the answers they desire. He shot down the idea of a potential industrial action.
