NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s been a tough week for police as several shootings and murders were recorded both here in New Providence and in Grand Bahama.

Less than six months into the year, the country has reached a grim milestone of 50 murders. Last year, there were a total of 110 murders.

Since the weekend, there have been four murders.

On Saturday, an 18-year-old was gunned down on a basketball court and a 15-year-old shot to death as he slept in a home.

Then on Wednesday, a man being electronically monitored was killed on a construction site in Grand Bahama.

And yesterday, a double shooting left a 22-year-old dead and landed another victim in the hospital.

It’s a story told far too often. Community leaders like Crime Consultant Carlos Reid say the uptick has been alarming.

And the majority of murders are due to gun violence.

Just this week, police arrested a man found with 15 firearms of different calibers along with ammunition and drugs.

Police are also placing much of the blame on gang violence.

Back on May 6, alleged gang leader Michael “Wheelchair” Fox was brutally murdered in the Fox Hill community.

Reid says it’s an unfortunate culture that exists.
