UNITED STATES – The United States Supreme Court ruled Monday that former presidents have absolute immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office but no immunity for unofficial acts.

The decision sends the federal election interference case against Donald Trump back to a lower court, delaying the trial further.

Prosecutors allege Trump pressured officials to reverse the 2020 election result and exploited the January 6th capitol riot to stay in power.

The ruling was 6-3, with one justice warning it puts the president above the law.
