Team Bahamas One Win Away From Olympic Birth

VALENCIA, SPAIN – The senior men’s national team won the biggest basketball game in our nation’s history, defeating Lebanon 89-72.

Deandre Ayton lived up to his “Dominayton” moniker, controlling the inside with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Buddy Hield added 19 points and led the team with 10 assists.

The young sensation VJ Edgecombe had 13 points, on 6 of 7 shooting, and he rounded out the stat sheet with 6 rebounds and 8 assists.

The game was much closer than the final score suggested with Lebanon getting the game to within 8 points in the third quarter.

But The Bahamas went on a run in the 4th, punctuated by a clutch three by VJ Edgecombe to end Lebanon’s run and seal the victory for the 242.

Head Coach Chris DiMarco was happy for the gritty win.

Top Swimmers Honored at Ceremony

Despite torrential rain and wind putting an end to swimming nationals last month, top swimmers in their respective age categories got their trophies in a ceremony held yesterday at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatics Center.

Anthonique Rolle, high point winner for girls 8 and under, said, “It feels really good, like icing on the cake.”

Anthonique’s brother also took home a top prize as well. Christon Joseph, high point winner for boys 11-12, said, “It feels good, fourth time in a row.”

Other winners included Alissa Ferguson, Kyana Higgs, Saleste Gibson, and Rhanishka Gibbs.

Alissa Ferguson, high point winner for girls 11-12, said, “I was planning to do really good.”

Kyana Higgs, high point winner for girls 15-17, said, “I was working hard and it worked out.”

Saleste Gibson, best swimmer for girls 13-14, said, “100 free is my favorite, would’ve been.”

Rhanishka Gibbs, best swimmer for girls 15-17, said, “I feel very proud, got the record.”

The overall winner for the meet was Mako Aquatics with 2,920 points.
