NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A disturbance in the Atlantic marked in the National Hurricane Center’s seven-day graphical tropical weather outlook has been the topic of discussion over the past few days leaving many stressed as all islands of The Bahamas are highlighted in area of a disturbance which has a 50% chance of development in the next seven days.

Put simply? It does not automatically mean there’s a hurricane coming.

Based on the NHC’s, Monday 2pm update, it means there’s a 50 % chance that the area of “disturbed weather” in the Atlantic could possibly develop into a tropical depression within the next seven days.

And that depends on conditions in the Atlantic.

The chance of it happening within the next 48 hours is marked low, at near zero percent.

So while there’s no need to panic, now’s a good time to check in with your level of hurricane preparedness.

Things like making sure you have enough non-perishable food and water for each person for three to seven days, a battery-operated radio and clock, and cash.

Even if not for this potential storm, it’s vital to know where your nearest shelter is, and backup location.
