Bahamians In Tampa Brace For Hurricane Helene

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As Hurricane Helene intensifies on its path toward the Florida Gulf Coast, our Delvardo Emmanuel spoke with Bahamians living in the area who are bracing for the potential impact of what could become a major storm.

Hurricane Helene is now predicted to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to hit Florida’s eastern coastline within the next 48 hours.

Florida Governor Ron Desantis has already declared a state of emergency, urging residents in low-lying areas and coastal regions to evacuate as soon as possible.

Cyle Hepburn has lived in Tampa for nineteen years and says they’re taking no chances with Helene.

Still haunted by the devastation Hurricane Dorian on his hometown of Grand Bahama in 2019, he says he’s taking early precautions, fully aware of the storm’s potential for catastrophic damage.

He says the Bahamian community on campus is close knitted. And despite having to stay on campus, he has no concerns.

For now, residents can only wait, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.
