NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Central and South Eleuthera Member of Parliament Clay Sweeting is defending the government’s work on the island despite ongoing power and water issues. As Works and Family Island Affairs Minister, Sweeting says the government is committed to resolving these challenges in the new year.

“The challenge this weekend was in regards to transmission and distribution, not generation. The generation issue for the most part, I think, is alleviated for the winter months. They’re working on a plan for the summer months. When you look at the water issue, that is a by-product of an electricity issue.”

Sweeting stated that efforts were made this week to improve the water supply, with new measures being implemented to ensure reliable service.

“So they’re working on that now. I think for the most part, Eleuthera, besides Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, has portable water to this point.”

Sweeting, who lives in Eleuthera, understands the frustration of residents and promises the government will continue working to fix these long-standing issues.

“But to your question, you know, if I wasn’t concerned, I don’t think I’d be a good member of parliament. Because your job is to be concerned about everything if your constituents are not getting everything they deserve. Now, if you want to ask if the government is working on it, we are. This is a 40/50-year-old crisis we are sitting in the chair, we must fix it, that’s the bottom line.”
