NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The melodies of flutes, cymbals and drums echoed throughout the downtown district on Sunday evening as members of the nation’s law enforcement bands took part in the annual Pre-Independence Beat Retreat.

As the country gears up to commemorate 53 years, officers from one law enforcement agency made their musical debut, composing a new chapter in history.

Regarded as one of the most anticipated events of the country’s Independence season, the annual Pre-Independence Beat Retreat took place in Rawson Square in Nassau, dazzling an audience that included the nation’s Governor General, Prime Minister, dignitaries, diplomats and hundreds of Bahamians on Sunday evening.

The performance showcased intricate foot choreography and precise formations. It featured the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Band, the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services Band and, making their debut, the Bahamas Department of Immigration.

The Assistant Band Director for BDI, Senior Officer Dwayne Kelly Jr., says this is the inaugural band the department has had since its establishment in 1939.

“This is a big deal for us today. We’re getting our feet wet. People are actually getting a feel of our presence out there on a national stage. We plan to go out there and put on a good show, but most importantly, have fun with it too.”

Latrell Sweeting, wife of BDI band member George Sweeting, shared her pride in watching her husband and his bandmates etch their names into the history of the country.
