NASSAU, BAHAMAS – “Crime is not down at all, ” one New Providence resident told Our News on Monday.

Another resident said The Bahamas right now is on auto walk.

“Young man, especially are out of hand. There is no rehabilitative plan in place by either governments or successive governments to curtail this problem.”

Those were just some of the responses I got when I asked residents how they feel about the crime situation in the country.

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe revealed in Parliament last week that crime was down by six percent overall but murders are up 13 percent.

Despite the recently released statistics, residents say they’re not buying the numbers.

While there’s been calls for stiffer penalties, these residents say capital punishment is not the solution.
