NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A judge has ruled in favor of a man who sued after he sustained severe injuries while in police custody.

Demetrius Pyfrom-Major was arrested and detained at the Harbour Island police station on October 27, 2020, on suspicion that he stole a car battery.

During questioning by police, he alleged that he was hit and slammed to the ground, causing a dislocated pelvis and chipped hip bone.

Pyfrom-Major had to be airlifted to New Providence for surgery and to this day can only walk with the use of crutches.

Following a trial, Chief Justice Sir Ian Winder found that his injuries were caused by unlawful and excessive force at the hands of police.

Sir Ian rejected suggestions that the injuries were sustained when police restrained Pyfrom-Major when he tried to escape.
