Prolonged Power Outages Leave Abaco Residents In The Dark For Hours

ABACO – Electricity has become the latest challenge for residents in Abaco, an island still working to rebuild its resilience. For days, communities have faced rolling outages lasting anywhere from several hours to nearly a full day.

While BPL now says electricity has been fully restored, residents are demanding clearer answers about what caused the crisis, and whether it could happen again.

Among those speaking out is Roscoe Thompson, chairman of the Marsh Harbour–Spring City Township and a Central Abaco Council member. He says the uncertainty has left many in the dark, both literally and figuratively.

Thompson explains that outages began on December 1 and quickly escalated. Some areas experienced four to six hours without power each day, while others went 15 to 18 hours without electricity this week. He says the impact has been widespread, affecting businesses, tourism and daily life across the island.

In a statement issued today, BPL confirmed that after hours of load-testing a replacement compressor, generation at the Wilson City plant was restored at 2:11 a.m., with full island-wide restoration achieved just over an hour later. The company notes that only a small section of Hope Town and White Sound remains offline due to a separate cable fault, and specialized equipment is on the way to complete those repairs.

Despite the progress, Thompson says residents are still asking for transparency. He believes the public deserves straightforward updates about the extent of the problem, how it will be resolved, and what steps are being taken to stabilize Abaco’s power supply going forward.

As for when the situation will fully stabilize, that remains unclear. BPL confirmed that four generators are currently stationed on the island, but only one is operational at this time.
