NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamas equestrian history was rewritten this week as 13-year-old Gabriela Souza became the first Bahamian athlete to compete in FEI dressage.

She earned bronze in the Children’s Division and helped her mixed team secure gold at the CDI-W Mexico 2025 event at Rancho St. Vincent.

The competition was part of the FEI Borrowed Horses Project, an initiative that allows riders ages 12 to 18 to compete on host-provided horses. It also marked the first time The Bahamas participated in a Dressage World Cup qualifier in the Americas.

Souza rode “Gitano” under coach Jessica McTaggart of Grand Cayman. She scored 67.1 percent in the preliminary test and 65.4 percent in the team event. She later joined riders from Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States to win gold for the mixed team.

Equestrian Bahamas President Cathy Ramsingh-Pierre called the moment a major breakthrough for the sport’s growth in the country and says it signals a new era for Bahamian dressage athletes.
