Contractors Association: Hospital Could Be Built with 100% Bahamian Labor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the government moves forward with the construction of a new hospital for New providence, the Bahamas Contractors Association isn’t happy about the details revealed so far.

Specifically, the 50:50 Bahamian to foreign laborers ratio for the project, which Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville says the government is still looking to negotiate a better arrangement.

Contractors Association President Leonard Sands says experience tells us, situations like these don’t end in favour of the worker.

The government signed an initial framework agreement with the Chinese government for the construction of a new hospital facility in New Providence earlier this month.

Construction is expected to take up to 36 months to complete.

Meanwhile, Sands is reflecting on the construction of The Pointe in downtown Nassau.

The heads of agreement mandated a 70:30 Bahamian to foreign labor ratio but that didn’t happen with the Department of Labour having to step in.
