“It’s unfortunate that an incident like this has occurred, but we are committed to ensuring that the integrity of the registration process is maintained.”

Police said that the incident unfolded last Thursday at the National Insurance Board, where a woman was found in possession of a suspected fraudulent voter’s card.

Officers were called to the scene, and a 33-year-old woman was taken into custody, followed by a 31-year-old male employee of the Parliamentary Registration Department.

Both remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Our Delvardo sat with Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson.

He said that new protocols are already being put in place to prevent any similar incidents in the future.

“We have a registration team that has to go through several checks before they send it up to the computer team. They go through certain checks before things are on the register. It’s a back-and-forth process. If anything is identified, it is dealt with as quickly as possible.”

In a statement, the department said that this case is part of a broader cross-agency effort to detect and prevent fraud.

Officials said that it was actually the absence of a required parliamentary seal that raised red flags, triggering internal checks, which then revealed a mismatch between the name and identification number.

They also note the fraudulent card was never used for voting and may have been intended to obtain other forms of identification.

And for anyone worried about the integrity of the voters’ register, Thompson says safeguards are only being strengthened.

“Since that happened, we are putting some protocols in place that we hope will ensure this does not happen again. But you know, you’re dealing with people, so we impress upon our staff to be honest and upright. If you follow the law, we ask all to take its full course.”
