NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Imagine fighting cancer and not only having to get treatment, but also needing to find a place to stay.

That’s the reality for many Family Island patients who come to New Providence for treatment.

Now, the Cancer Society of The Bahamas is looking to change that. Today, the organization broke ground on a new facility that leaders say will better serve cancer patients and their families.

Fifty years of resilience has brought the Cancer Society of The Bahamas to this moment, expanding its reach with new patient rooms and conference spaces to support those in the fight against cancer.

Officials say this isn’t just construction in New Providence, it’s the continuation of a legacy.

As the society moves forward, its founder reflected on how far the organization has come, reminding supporters that progress is never the work of one person, but the result of many.

“Well, I see the program says, ‘How did we get here?’ Well, look at me. This is how we got here. What can I say? Fifty years on. Anyway, the main thing is this has been teamwork. It hasn’t just been a few volunteers and us as directors doing the work. It has been an army of people who have volunteered, and given up their time, their efforts and their money to get to this point.”

When it comes to the expansion, Cancer Society President Rochelle Wilkinson says it addresses a much deeper need, helping shape how patients experience one of the most difficult stages of their lives.

“Almost everywhere in the world hospice care is available. Here in The Bahamas we don’t have it, but this will allow people to have that quiet and the dignity of choosing how their last days will look, hopefully in peace and tranquility.”

Wilkinson says they are hopeful the expansion will be completed on schedule.

“The project will be completed sometime by the middle of next year, or early next year, we’re hoping.”

Earlier this year, the society signed a $5 million contract with Coastline Construction for the project.
