BPSU: Members Will Meet to Determine Action on Hazard Pay

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamas Public Service Union President Kimsley Ferguson making no promises industrial action will not be taken, if the union does not hear back from government on hazard pay for some Public Hospitals Authority workers.

Ferguson speaking with the media, following the signing of a $40 million industrial agreement with government, noting the union is still waiting to hear back from PHA and government officials on hazard pay for some of its members.

“There are people working in environments that are hazardous to their health,” Ferguson said, explaining that it also puts their family members at risk.

He says the union has been agitating for insurance coverage for those individuals and has made the appeal to the government.

Ferguson says those payments would be retroactive to July 1, 2022, however he says the PHA managing director has advised that they are awaiting the funds from the Ministry of Finance.

“Whatever the hold up is, nobody is communicating it to us so we can communicate it to our members,” Ferguson added.

The union expects to meet this week to determine next steps.
