Marital Rape is a Non-Issue, Says Pastor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the Davis administration moves ahead with plans to criminalize marital rape, a prominent pastor is continuing to speak out against the move. Bishop Walter Hanchell says it’s a non-issue and is calling on government to put a stop to planned legislation.

At last report, the proposed marital rape bill is still tied up in consultations.

However, Bahamas College of Bishops Chairman Bishop Walter S. Hanchell believes government should not criminalize marital rape and calls it ‘not an issue’.

Hanchell also referencing Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander’s statements that there have not been any complaints of marital rape to police.

Over the weekend, prominent Evangelist Rex Major lashed out against the idea saying that women can possibly use it as an excuse for divorce. Hanchell agrees with Major and says while the concept of marital rape is not biblical, rape and abuse within itself is wrong.

Now, Bishop Hanchell was clear in saying that his views on the matter are his own, not that of The Bahamas College of Bishops which he chairs.
