THE BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, 1986 There was a Chicago Tribune news article about the Goombay Festival.

Nassau International Airport (NIA) on New Providence is officially renamed Lynden Pindling International Airport.

This airport was founded many years ago on the western side of New Providence. NIA immediately opened up the Bahamas for tourism and was and still is the biggest and busiest airport in the Bahamas and the fourth busiest airport in the Caribbean.

Years after its establishment, the PLP government renamed the airport in honor of the first prime minister with his statue coming at a later date.

And finally in 2015, a 19-year-old Steven Gardiner defeats the 400 meter world champion. Gardiner made his country proud when he outran LaShawn Merritt to win the gold and a meet in Budapest Hungary with a time of 44.3 seconds.

Born on September 12, 1995 Gardiner started his career as a competitive volleyball player while also running track and field.
