Leaders Descend on New Providence for CARICOM
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Earlier this year, CARICOM leaders met in New Providence discussing everything from food security, to the economy, to climate change… and of course, high on the agenda, the crisis in Haiti. Our Megan Shepherd has a recap.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Earlier this year, CARICOM leaders met in New Providence discussing everything from food security, to the economy, to climate change… and of course, high on the agenda, the crisis in Haiti. Our Megan Shepherd has a recap.
30 delegates welcomed to The Bahamas in grand style for the 44th Meeting of Caribbean Leaders.
Then CARICOM Chairman Prime Minister Philip Davis, called for unity during the opening ceremony.
The CARICOM Triennial Award for women was bestowed upon none other than politician, activist, and attorney Dame Janet Bostwick for her invaluable contributions to the nation and region.
But, those opening ceremonies did not go off without a hitch. The leader of the Coalition of Independents, Lincoln Bain, promised that he and his supporters would make an appearance with a protest during the meetings. And that they did, Bain along with some of his supporters was taken into police custody.
High on the priority list during the meetings the escalating violence and death toll in Haiti.
On day two, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fred Mitchell, confirmed that The Bahamas and Jamaica committed to sending manpower to the struggling nation.
It was not just CARICOM leaders making an appearance. The United States Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, was also there.
