NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Team Bahamas is set to compete in four events next month at the World Athletics Relays, let’s take a look at the squad that will take on the world.
The women’s 4×100 pool will be headlined by Devynne Charlton and Charisma Taylor. It also includes former Olympian Pedrya Seymour, Camile Rutherford, Printassia Johnson, Jamiah Nabbie, Shayann Demeritte and Nia Richards.
The men’s 4×100 pool includes former Olympians Warren Fraser and Samson Colebrooke along with Samalie Farrington, Ian Kerr, Carlos Brown, Deedro Clarke, Blake Bartlett, and Jeremiah Adderley.
The men’s 4x400m relay team will be led by reigning 400m Olympic Champion Steven Gardiner who continues his return from injury. Joining him will be Alonzo Russell, Wendell Miller, Zion Sheperd, Clarke, Zion Miller, Lhevinne Joseph and Shakeem Hall-Smith.
Two-time Olympic Champion 400m Champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Anthonique Strachan will join the group for the mixed 4x400m team alongside Gardiner, Russell, Miller, Shepherd, Lacarthea Cooper, and Robyn Rolle-Curry.
The coaching staff will be led by David Charlton, assisted by Shaun Miller, Pauline Davis-Thompson, Ramon Miller, and Tyrone Burrows.
The World Athletics Relays returns to The Bahamas for the first time since 2017.
The top 14 teams at the event will automatically qualify for places at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
World Athletics Relays
National Sports Authority General Manager Moses Johnson ensured the Our News Sports Team that come May 4th the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium will be ready for the World Athletics Relays.
Responsible for the interior work at the stadium as well as the track itself is SJK Engineering and Construction.
So what’s left to be done?
NBA
The 2023-24 season was Deandre Ayton’s first with the Portland Trailblazers and the veteran big said it was a learning experience for his career moving forward.
Ayton averaged 16.7 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and shot 57 percent from the field in 55 contests for the Trailblazers.
Ayton’s numbers over the last two months of the season increased to over 23 points and 12 rebounds per game.
NCAA Track and Field
The NCAA outdoor season is underway and several Bahamians had standout performances last weekend.
At the Tom Jones Memorial Invite in Gainesville, Florida,
Keyshawn Strachan threw a season’s best 76.25m for the Auburn Tigers.
Also at the meet for the host team Florida Gators, Anthaya Charlton reached several milestones in the long jump.
Her mark of 6.60m is the seventh best jump in Gator history and is currently number 2 on the NCAA top list for 2024.
Tennessee’s Javonya Valcourt turned in a pr of 51.15 seconds, the number 2 mark in Lady Vols history.
At the Leon Johnson Invitational in Louisiana, Northwestern State’s Tarajh Hudson took third with a PR in the hammer throw at 50.20 and threw a season’s best of 55.32m in the discus.
Also competing for NSU, Brenesha Knowles posted a 51.79m throw to take bronze in the hammer throw and added a seasons best throw of 39 meters in the discus.
Carnitra Mackey placed 4th overall in the women’s javelin in 40.50m.
