GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Reactions from Grand Bahamians to yesterday’s budget news about the International Bazaar and the reopening of the West Sunrise Highway are mixed. Some are excited, while others hope the project doesn’t prove to be a distraction.

Marvin Bridgewater is one of many Grand Bahamians excited by the idea of the return of the iconic landmark. During his budget presentation, Prime Minister Davis announced that the government expects to source $30 million to fund the purchase of the International Bazaar and re-open the West Sunrise Highway.

Editor of the Grand Bahama News Courier, Fred Sturrup, said he felt the budget was encouraging and was thrilled to hear about the planned purchase and development of the Bazaar. Our news reached out to one of the owners of the Bazaar, who said that although Bazaar owners are in talks with the government, no deal has been affirmed yet. For some residents, while the promise of restoration is exciting, there are more pressing matters at hand for the island.
