CARIFTA Swimming

Several members of the 2024 CARIFTA swim team, named last Sunday, gathered for their first practice this weekend. Our Sasha Lightbourne was there and spoke to the head coach and team captains.

“We are ready to go!” That was the answer I got from the Head Coach of this year’s CARIFTA swim team Travano McPhee when I asked him about “all the noise in the market” concerning the ongoing renovations at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatics Center.

The team held its first practice on Saturday morning at St. Andrew’s School, followed by an afternoon practice at St. Anne’s Anglican High School.

Three of the team captains – Tristin Ferguson, Kyana Higgs and Rhanishka Gibbs are, just like their head coach, focused on claiming that sixth consecutive title.

CARIFTA Track and Field

A couple more Bahamian track athletes are headed to Grenada.

J’kaiyah Rolle qualified in the girls U-17 long jump and Annae Mackey in the U-20 shotput.

Javelin throwers Taysha Stubbs and Vanessa Sawyer should also make the squad.

Joshua Williams qualified in the boys U-17 high jump, Jaylen Stuart in the U-17 shotput and both Wyatt Cartwright and Ethan North qualified in the boys U-17 javelin.

Soccer

The Mingoes picked up a big, 6-0 win over Cavalier FC at the Roscow Davies field.

It was a hard-fought physical match but the Mingoes went ahead initially on a goal from midfielder Ronaldo Green in the 36th minute, they would take the 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to heroic play from goalie Antonio Beckford.

The floodgates would open in the second half with Kevin Thomas, Morgan Wood, Peter Julimis all scoring.

Green would add the coup-de-gras scoring in the 83rd in open play and in the 89th on a penalty for the hat trick.
