NASSAU, BAHAMAS – From the commissioner of police to the everyday Bahamian citizen, many have been calling for amendments to the Bail Act and stiffer penalties for those who continue to commit violent crime.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder K.C. noting that a committee has been established and consists of the police, prosecution and members of the judiciary.

The aim is to ensure suspects are properly prosecuted.

While there are presently two circumstances in which bail can be denied, Pinder says the 2024 Amendment Bill will address an additional circumstance, that is situations where bail should be revoked.

He adds that far too often we see persons who are already out on bail, re-offend, and are remarkably given bail again.

The amendment also removes the option of a fine, leaving imprisonment for those convicted of breaking their bail conditions.

He also highlights amendments 12, 12a and 12b as significant.
