NASSAU , BAHAMAS – For the second consecutive time, Prime Minister Philip Davis was sworn into the Office of the Prime Minister.

Family, supporters, and government officials gathered at Government House in a packed ballroom as Davis officially took the oath of office and received his instruments of appointment from Governor General Cynthia Pratt.

The prime minister told attendees his victory was a vote of confidence in the past and a vote for ambition in the future.

“I give thanks to Almighty God for bringing us to this moment. Through Him, all things are not only possible, but can be manifest. I’m profoundly grateful and extend my heartfelt thanks to all who voted in support of our platform, our team, and my leadership.”

But it wasn’t all celebratory.

Davis addressed the low voter turnout, a trend seen in the 2021 general elections, along with previous by-elections.

The Tribune reported a 58 percent turnout at the polls.

“This decline in voter participation is already being seen around the region and, indeed, the world. Friends, I don’t want our country to follow others down that path. Government of the people, by the people, requires that the people express their views via the vote.”

And Davis didn’t stop there.

He also called out those critical of the electoral process, particularly members of the Free National Movement and the Coalition of Independents, for questioning the work and efficiency of the Parliamentary Department.

“Election process this year has been especially divisive. Some of what was said and done went well beyond the bounds of personal decency. As a measure of success in our effort as a community, I hope that future elections may be judged on our ability to disagree strongly, but engage respectfully.”
