HARBOUR ISLAND , BAHAMAS – For days, family, friends and residents held on to hope that 15-year-old Jayden Ferguson would be found alive, but on Tuesday morning that hope gave way to heartbreak after the body of a juvenile male was discovered washed ashore on a beach on Harbour Island.

Sources close to Our News have identified the remains as Ferguson’s, but police say formal identification is still outstanding.

As the community awaits official confirmation, his classmates are reflecting on the life of a teenager they describe as outgoing, humorous and actively involved in school life.

Cordesha Cartwright says Ferguson was athletic, full of energy and had big dreams for his future.

“He was a very humorous person. He played basketball, he played volleyball, he did Junkanoo. He wanted to be an entrepreneur. He played pickleball. He’s very athletic.”

Cartwright says the uncertainty of the past several days has been difficult as classmates and friends struggle to process the possibility of losing someone who meant so much to them.

For Casey Dean, the wait has been especially painful.

He says he shared a close bond with Ferguson and that their last conversation took place on the evening the teenager went missing.

“I did everything, basically everything, with him.”

“He asked me if I wanted to go. I said no, I was coming out later.”

Ferguson went swimming with another teenage boy on Sunday evening, despite dangerous sea conditions.

As the waves grew rough, only one of the boys made it back to shore. Ferguson did not resurface, prompting residents to join the search for the missing teenager.

Now, Dean is left holding on to memories of a friend he says had a special way of bringing people together, even during an ordinary school day.

“We would get our work done, but right after that, he’d make the whole class laugh.”

“He’s very caring. We really talk about God a lot, too, so he’s really believing in God and very caring. If you need money, he’d give it to you.”

While sources close to Our News have identified the remains as Jayden Ferguson, police say official identification is still pending.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to help determine the cause of death. Investigators say they do not suspect foul play at this time.
