TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS – Hurricane Fiona drenched the Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday as a Category 3 storm. The storm’s eye skirted Grand Turk as residents there remained under curfew while Fiona battered those islands. Our Sasha Lightbourne spoke with a TCI cabinet minister for an update.

Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructural Development in the Turks and Caicos Islands Akierra Missick says there were no casulties following the passing of Hurricane Fiona. She says initial assessments are already underway on all of the islands and cays.

Missick, whose portfolio includes the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies or DDME, says the causeway connecting north to middle Caicos also received some damage.

She adds HMS Medway – which is a Royal Navy vessel from England, is already on the ground in Grand Turk with supplies and that South Caicos received some localized flooding.

The DDME minister also explaining that Providenciales International Airport is open but others remain closed.

As for when schools may reopen, Missick says schools may be delayed in some areas on the islands.
