Minnis To Step Aside At FNM Convention

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Free National Movement is eying late November for its convention. Party officials last night decided that Former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis will remain leader until a new one is chosen at the convention.

Today makes one week since the party’s crushing defeat at the polls leaving it with only 7 seats out of 39.

After the executive council of the FNM voted to have Minnis stay on as leader 17-12 on Tuesday night, the party’s Central Council made the decision to keep him on as leader, at least until the party’s convention, for a date to be set no later than the end of November.

The FNM has not held a convention since 2016, although the party’s constitution says one should be held every two years.

Members of the party have been split on what to do next, with some saying Minnis should step down now and allow the party to move on. Others feel he deserves a chance or the opportunity to remain on until a next leader is chosen.

Neither the press nor the public were allowed inside the meeting.

Now the party is looking forward to its convention. While there have been talks of who could be next to lead the party, those whose names have been in those discussions remain tightlipped.
