UNITED STATES – Google has reaffirmed that Gmail is not shutting down, responding to a widespread hoax on social media claiming otherwise.

The hoax, originating on X (formerly Twitter) and garnering over seven million views, falsely stated that Gmail would close in August. Google refuted this misinformation on the same platform.

While social networks struggle to address misinformation, x has faced particular criticism, with the EU branding it worse than its peers in spreading falsehoods.

The hoax appears to stem from a real email sent by Google in 2023, notifying users of changes to Gmail’s html view.
