ACKLINS, BAHAMAS – Our hangout – a nod to the lively introductions of meteorologist Greg Thompson, who infuses each mention of the settlement with an extra flair befitting its name.

Once a thriving community boasting a bustling population, Delectable Bay now stands as a testament to resilience, as its numbers have gradually declined over the years.

Yet, amidst its decades-long transition, natives like Marcus Anderson remain steadfast in their belief that Acklins is primed for a resurgence.

Something we found out during our visit is the great pride Acklins islanders have for their heritage with a unique talent for harnessing the island’s natural resources and a good ole’ game of cards.

During our lively game, Chief Councilor Marvin Campbell shared his unwavering faith in Acklins’ potential for growth and prosperity.

Right in his own establishment, Leaky’s, nestled in Delectable Bay, Marvin recounted the journey that led him to establish this vibrant restaurant, offering a delectable array of Bahamian favorites, from grouper to conch, at affordable prices.

And Leaky’s was born, also catering to health-conscious diners with traditional Bahamian drinks like switcha and a variety of salads.

Marvin’s entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t stop there. He hinted at upcoming additions to the menu, including acklins cascarilla-infused drinks.

As for our friendly card game with the chief, while we initially held the lead, his skill quickly caught us up.

You win some. You lose some and in this case, we lost the game.

Nevertheless, it merely adds to the allure of returning to reclaim our victory in both cards and experiencing the winning streak of Acklins once more.

Our weeklong journey has left us feeling like champions, eager to return to this charming island community.
